Atlanta Police Statement on Public Safety During College Football Playoff National Championship Events

ATLANTA —   The Atlanta Police Department is thankful to the thousands of visitors who came into the city over the past few days to experience the College Football Playoff National Championship and surrounding events at a number of key venues. We truly hope they felt the visibility and presence of the hundreds of law enforcement officers from APD and other local, state and federal agencies who worked tirelessly over the weekend and through Monday’s game to ensure their safety. We are pleased that there were no major incidents during the game and related events. We did experience a small handful of reports we typically see associated with such large events, including suspicious packages, thefts from vehicles and other petty thefts of property. None of the reported suspicious packages were deemed a hazard. Inside the venue on game day, we did make eight arrests – three related to two separate fights and five related to the counterfeiting of event credentials. The individuals arrested for fraudulent credentials were attempting to access the game. Overall, we believe event-goers heeded our advice to take public transportation, arrive early to the game and report suspicious activity. We are grateful to the public for ensuring a smooth event and to our many law enforcement partners for the collaboration and planning to pull it off.
