Statement on Officer Involved Shooting

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields announces that after meeting today with Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. the video surveillance footage captured by the Atlanta Police Department in connection with the January 26, 2017 shooting of Deaundre Phillips will be released on February 24, 2017. Mr. Howard and GBI Director Vernon Keenan are conducting the investigation of the shooting and currently interviewing both law enforcement and citizen witnesses. Both the District Attorney and the GBI would like to make sure that no witness may view the tape before making an official statement. The credibility of statements made after the tape could be viewed may be questioned. The witness interviews should be completed by the February 24th date.

Even though this new date is later than initially suggested, by working with the District Attorney’s office, we have shared the footage of the incident with the Phillips family and their attorney, Chris Stewart. On February 24th, the tape will be released for all to see.

“I am not pleased with the perceived lack of transparency surrounding this incident. Police shooting investigations should be characterized by two principal factors—finding the truth and total transparency to the public. Accordingly, Mr. Howard and I agreed to sit down within the next several weeks and develop a detailed protocol for these investigations, so that the Atlanta Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, the GBI, the media, and most importantly the public will know exactly what to expect. Mr. Howard and I both agree that members of the public should work with us to develop this protocol.”

In the spirit of the transparency I require from my department, I am hereby releasing the name of the officer involved in the shooting. His name is Yasim Abdulahad. He is an 11-year veteran of the department and was assigned to the Gun Reduction Task Force at the time of the incident.” – Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields.
