Major Browning began his career with the Atlanta Police Department in 1983. After graduating the police academy, he was assigned to the downtown district, (Zone 5) as a uniformed patrol officer. In 1988, he was promoted to the rank of Detective and assigned to the Narcotics Unit of the Special Investigations Section. From 1993 to 2002, he served as a Sergeant for the Atlanta Police Department and was assigned to the elite Red Dog Drug Unit, the Narcotics Unit, and the SWAT Team where he served as a Negotiator, SWAT supervisor, and a Bomb Technician. In 2002, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the Airport as the evening watch commander and a bomb technician. In 2003, he was transferred back to the Narcotics Unit where he served as the commander. In 2005, he was transferred to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) unit where he served as the Deputy Director of Operations. The HIDTA unit is a Multi-Jurisdictional Federal Drug Task Force that consists of local, state, and federal drug agents that investigate high-level Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTO) operating in the United States and abroad. Major Browning was promoted to his present rank of Major in September 2008 and assigned as the Night Commander. The Night Commander is a position that serves as the ranking officer during the evening and morning watch hours to resolve problems and monitor critical situations. Major Browning continues to serve as the commander of the Hostage Negotiation Team.
Major Browning also serves on the Executive Council for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics for the State of Georgia. The Torch Run raises money to help fund athletes to attend Summer and Winter Special Olympics Games. Major Browning also serves as on the Board of Directors for Georgia Chapter Seven of The Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. Georgia Seven is the sponsor of the Georgia Police Memorial Ride which raises money to help send families of fallen officers to the Police Memorial Week held each year in Washington, DC.
Major Browning is a graduate of the University of Georgia and is currently enrolled in the Graduate program at Saint Leo University.
