Major Elder Dancy


Special Operations Section Commander

Major Elder Dancy joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1989.  He is currently the Major in charge of Special Operations where he oversees SWAT, Motors, Accident Investigation, the Air unit, and Mounted Patrol. He was appointed to the rank of Major in September 2010, and first assigned as the Commander of the Office of Professional Standards.

During his 21 year tenure, he worked in various assignments. As a Police Officer, he worked in Zone 4, where he served as a beat officer. Later, he was selected to work in the Special Operations Section as a Mounted Patrol Officer.

As a supervisor, Major Dancy was assigned to the Red Dog Unit where he worked as a Sergeant. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2003 and worked in various assignments including Precinct Commander in Midtown and Auburn Avenue, Zone Five Investigations, Background/Recruitment Unit, and SOS Assistant Commander. During his tenure as the Background/Recruitment Unit Commander in 2007, the Unit aggressively recruited and hired a record setting 251 officers. Major Dancy was selected as Supervisor of the Year in 2007. In 2010, he was appointed to the rank of Captain and assigned to the Airport Section where he served as the Assistant Airport Commander.

Major Dancy is a Mississippi native who moved to Atlanta to join the Department. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University in Louisiana. He currently resides in Southeast Atlanta.
