Major Reginald Mitchell joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1987. After graduating from the Atlanta Police Academy he was assigned to the Zone 2 precinct, where he worked until 1989. He was then selected to join the Red Dog Unit. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and maintained his assignment in the Red Dog Unit; serving as a supervisor in one of the Department's elite specialized units.In 2000, Major Mitchell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Robbery Unit, where he oversaw the investigative responsibilities of the unit; while developing tactical response plans to curb robberies. Major Mitchell went on to serve as the Red Dog Unit Commander before transferring to the Special Operations Section as the Assistant Commander of the unit. Major Mitchell was then assigned to the Airport Section as the Assistant Commander and served in that capacity until assuming the role as the Fugitive Unit Commander. In January 2010, Reginald Mitchell was appointed to the rank of Major. Major Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Leo University in Business Administration. He earned his Master's degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. Major Mitchell is a native Atlantan and in 1982 was a member of the first graduating class of Benjamin E. Mayes High School.
