Atlanta Police Prepared for Multiple Labor Day Weekend Events

ATLANTA –  The Atlanta Police Department is ready for Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest weekends in the City of Atlanta. APD recommends city residents and visitors be mindful of events beginning Thursday, August 29, with the Downtown and Midtown areas experiencing the largest crowds. We urge everyone to anticipate increased pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow and allow extra time for traveling in the city.

Several hundred thousand people are expected to attend major events through Monday, to include Dragon Con, Atlanta Black Pride, Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game, Taste of Soul Atlanta and LudaDay Weekend. Other smaller events are taking place throughout the city at various locations. In addition to Downtown and Midtown, large crowds can be expected at Piedmont Park, Lakewood amphitheater, Lenox Square and other city landmarks and destinations.

Atlanta Police officers will be highly visible in the city to help protect the public, ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible and respond to any public safety needs.

“Labor Day weekend in Atlanta offers a broad variety of events that bring our communities together with a common goal of celebrating our diverse passions,” said Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. “We encourage everyone to enjoy the events responsibly and know that our officers are out there working to keep them safe.”

Below are tips to assist in the safe and efficient navigation of the City of Atlanta during the holiday weekend:

  • Event-goers should be mindful of their surroundings and call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious activity.
  • Travel smart by taking MARTA, ride-share/taxi services or carpooling to your destination.
  • Remove all valuables from vehicles to deter criminals attempting to break-in and steal items.
  • If you decide to drink alcohol and need to travel, designate a sober driver or use ride-share/taxi.
  • Check event websites for information about backpacks, food and other restrictions.
  • When walking from one area to another, it is best to stay in well-lit areas and travel in groups.
  • Move to the street if not using your feet, all scooter riders must travel in the street or in a lite individual transport lane (formerly known as a bike lane) and obey all traffic laws.
  • Do not allow firearms to fall into the hands of criminals, by not leaving them in unattended vehicles.
