Updated Statement (Released on 04/26/24):

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) is committed to protecting the First Amendment rights of all Atlantans and has consistently supported numerous demonstrations each year in a professional and lawful manner.

On April 25th, at the request of the Emory Police Department (EPD), APD assisted the EPD in securing the campus when a group of protestors refused multiple requests by EPD to disperse peacefully. Unfortunately, during these interactions our law enforcement officers were met with violence. The Emory Police Department is the lead agency for campus matters and is managing this incident. As the lead agency, EPD issued actions and charges. At their request for assistance to address trespass issues by some protestors, members of APD were engaged and assisted in detaining individuals who did not comply with the dispersal order and individuals who violated the law. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our college communities in and around the Atlanta area. There are times when educational institutions seek assistance from APD, and we remain dedicated to supporting them within the bounds of the law and their university policies. In addition, Mayor Dickens is looking to convene with presidents of institutions of higher learning in Atlanta to develop ways to create dialogue for pathways forward.

Original Statement (Released on 04/25/24):

On April 25, 2024, the Emory Police Department requested assistance regarding a protest on their campus. A group of students and non-students were requested to disperse multiple times by Emory Police. In response, Emory Police requested assistance from supporting law enforcement agencies including the Atlanta Police Department (APD). Another dispersal order was issued, the crowd refused to comply. At Emory’s request, law enforcement began assisting Emory PD in securing the campus. When this happened, law enforcement officers were met with violence. We are aware APD officers used chemical irritants during the incident. However, APD did not deploy rubber bullets. We urge everyone to stay safe and exercise peaceful means of free speech. The Emory Police Department is the lead agency, please direct any further questions to them.
