Major Daniel Ray Rasmussen joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1989 and has held the ranks of Patrolman, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain. He is currently the Commander of the Special Operations Section where he oversees the Accident Investigation, Air, Motors, Auto Crimes, Mounted Patrol units and High Intensity Traffic and SWAT teams.
Major Rasmussen began his career as a Patrolman and Field Investigation Team Officer in Zone 5. He was promoted to Detective and assigned to the Narcotics Unit and later to the Fugitive Unit. In 1998, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as the Field Investigation Team Supervisor in Zone 6. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2003 and was assigned to Zone 1. As a Lieutenant, he served as a Watch Commander in Zone 1, Zone 4, Zone 5 and Zone 6. He also served as the Unit Commander over Narcotics, VICE, Financial Investigation Unit, Fulton Burglary Task Force, Pawn Desk, Complex Auto Theft and Repeat Offender Unit. In 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the Assistant Section Commander of Special Operations Sections until 2019 when he was promoted to the rank of Major over the Special Operations Section.
Major Rasmussen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Millikin University in 1988. He holds a teacher certification for grades six-12 in the areas of Biological Science and Physical Education. In 1989, he received his Private Pilot Rotorcraft/Helicopter license. He graduated with a Master of Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University in 2015 and was a member of the first graduating class of the Atlanta Police Leadership Institute Tier 4.
Major D. Rasmussen and his wife have been married for 28 years and have one daughter. He enjoys sports, spending time with his family and lifelong learning. He strives to put his faith into daily life and is proud to serve his community.
