Special Operations Section

Major Eddie R. Smith has more than 25 years of service with the Atlanta Police Department. Smith is a native of Atlanta. He grew up in the Thomasville Heights community in Zone 3, southeast Atlanta. He joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1994 and attended the Atlanta Police Academy with recruit class #155. 

After graduating from the Atlanta Police Academy, Smith was assigned as a beat officer in Zone 6, in east Atlanta. He later was assigned to the Zone 6 Field Investigation Team (FIT). While working with the FIT unit, Smith worked on undercover operations. In 2002, Smith was promoted to investigator and was assigned to the Narcotics Unit, where he worked for two years. In 2004, Smith was assigned to the Fugitive Unit.  In 2005, Smith was promoted to sergeant and worked as a supervisor for Zone 4, morning watch in southwest Atlanta. Smith spent several years in Zone 4, later going to work with the Crime Suppression Unit on the day watch.  In 2013, Smith returned to the Fugitive Unit as supervisor, where he remained until early 2016. 

Later in 2016, Smith was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as the commander of the Zone 6 Crime Suppression Unit and in 2017 he was assigned to be the commander of the Fugitive Unit.  As Commander of the Fugitive Unit, 97% of unit arrests concentrated on apprehending violent felons throughout the country.  

In January 2019, Smith was promoted to captain and assigned to the Special Operations Section as assistant commander.  Smith assisted with the daily operation of the unit. In August of 2019, Smith was appointed to the rank of major and was assigned as commander of the Special Operation Section which consists of the following units: SWAT, Accident Investigation Unit, Aviation Unit, Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit, Mounted Patrol, High Intensity Traffic Team(HITT) and Motors Unit. 

Smith earned a football scholarship to attend South Carolina State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Smith proudly served the in the United States Army for four and a half years, where he was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Kuwait during Desert Storm/Shield, and the Gulf War.
